Datang ‘clear of complicity’

CHINA'S Datang Telecom Technology yesterday denied it has obtained sensitive computer data from three Lucent scientists charged with technology piracy.
In a statement published in newspapers yesterday, the listed firm also expressed shock and regret over reports of its role in the Lucent ‘espionage' case which involves three Chinese scientists.
FBI agents arrested the trio last week, saying they conspired to steal source code and software from an Internet server operated by Lucent.
The defendants founded ComTriad Technologies in January 2000 to negotiate a joint venture project with Datang Telecom Technology, which is majority-owned by the Chinese Government, according to the US attorney's office.
According to a complaint filed in a US District Court, the technology stolen from Lucent — source code and software for the PathStar Access Server which facilitates transmission of voice communication through the Internet while also providing call-waiting, speed dialing and other features — was stored on a password-protected website created by ComTriad and transferred to Datang in a US$1.2 million joint venture known as DTNET.
“As a publicly listed company, Datang strictly abides by laws and regulations designed to protect intellectual property rights," it said.
Datang had not received the source code, it said yesterday.
The company has not been accused of complicity in the case.
Datang said although its board had approved the venture with ComTriad, legal procedures had not been completed and no capital, including technology outlay agreed by both parties' shareholders, had actually been invested.(SD-Agencies)
