My life at SZ Senior High School
|
Scott Smith
WHEN I first came to China I did not speak a word of Chinese, outside of ni hao and xie xie, which I learned on the plane over. So when I arrived at my new school in Shenzhen, I was a bit worried. I didn't know what to expect, what the school would be like, or what the other teachers would be like.
On our way to Shenzhen Senior High School, Jeffrey, my contact teacher, told me about how new and beautiful the school was. There are many fountains in the school, as well as planters in the walls from which long flowering plants grow. With not much traffic around the campus, the school is pretty quiet and peaceful. We also have excellent sports facilities. There are four full basketball courts, a table tennis room, numerous badminton courts, a beautiful new track, a field, and tennis courts.
The teachers here are very helpful. If I need help with my Chinese lessons they are right there, and willing to help. They are also very friendly. When I go to the teacher's office, we end up talking about all kinds of things.
The best part about Shenzhen Senior High School is the students. They are very friendly toward me, and interested in learning more about the Western world. I have spent many hours on the playground with them playing basketball and rugby. I even played on the school team in a rugby tournament, an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Many students also visit me in my home. They want to see pictures of my family and friends. The English level of students here is amazing. Most of my Senior One students can have a normal conversation with me. We can discuss the differences between America and China, because I am here not only to teach, but also to learn myself.
