THE week-long May Day holiday is over, and the bean-counters have weighed in, saying the holiday earned 1.642 billion yuan (about US$197 million) for the city, while 2.54 million visitors passed through, increases of 10 per cent and 12 per cent over the same period last year respectively, the SZ Municipal Holiday Office disclosed yesterday.
The total number includes 380,000 overseas visitors, contributing US$50 million in foreign exchange earnings, an increase of 33 per cent and 25 per cent over last year's May Day holiday.
The “Golden Week" has become a mainstay for tourism-related enterprises, earning them 296 million yuan this year alone.
In another development, more than 2.06 million people passed through SZ checkpoints during the first week of May.
The SZ Municipal Holiday Office said it received no reports on accidents endangering the safety of tourists during the week. Random polling of 1,000 tourists showed over 97 per cent of them were satisfied with SZ's tourism service and environment, while the rest complained about high costs.(Li Jing)
