THE China Ethnic Commodities Trade Fair will begin in Shenzhen tomorrow and run until May 13.
It will be the first time a coastal city has held such a fair. Most of China's minority ethnic groups live in the inland and western areas of the country.
All of the country's 56 ethnic groups have signed on for the fair. About 2,000 exhibitors will occupy 1,200 booths in the China Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Centre.
Mou Benli, vice-director of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and also director of the fair's organizing committee, said that SZ was chosen as the venue because the city enjoys international popularity and is a leading region in terms of reform and opening up to the outside world. He also cited SZ's economic strength and advantages in human resources and its vicinity to prosperous international markets as reasons for choosing the city.
Referring to the Central Government's strategy to develop the western region, Mou said the event could help the exchange between the western region and the developed coastal areas.
According to Mou, one of the focuses of the fair will be the products of 22 minority nationalities the population of each of which is below 100,000.
CDM, one of the United States' most important distributors of Chinese products, and about 20 companies from Japan, Britain, Singapore, Australia, Brunei and other countries will also attend the fair.
