Multimedia reinforces education

Zhou Jianchuan
A SERIES of education-aided facilities, based on multimedia technology, have received awards from the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Science & Technology, and are on track to being placed throughout the city, Shenzhen Aolinda Electronic Technology Co Ltd recently told Shenzhen Daily.
The awarded achievements, including a digital language learning system, a multimedia classroom, and a two-way television remote control system, were sponsored by Aolinda and developed under the combined efforts of the company's engineers and researchers with the National University of Defence and Technology (NUDT).
OML-2000, the digital language learning system, largely concentrates on communication between the teacher and the students. Engineers demonstrated the system in the company's lab. The engineers say it improves on electronic systems, since it has increased functions of watching and speaking, as well as an editable voice programme. Engineers said the quality of voice and images would not be compromised even if they pass through hundreds of computers.
"Communication in a class becomes controllable: it can be single to single, single to multiple, or multiple to multiple," said Li Quansen, the company's chief engineer.
"Using the system is quite a simple matter. It's easy for students to follow and repeat, it's easy to retrieve the information you need, and it has the function of bookmarks," he added.
The multimedia classroom system consists of an interchangeable network designed and developed for classes other than language learning. In this system, a teacher can monitor the students' screens and determine what should be on their screens, keeping them from watching irrelevant programmes. In a class demonstration, information and programmes can be transmitted from teacher to students. It can also be done from one student to others.
The two-way television remote control system, meanwhile, is a collection of classrooms linked to a master-control room. Information sources are kept in the master-control room but can be made available in any connected classroom through a remote control device. By this means, multimedia education can be carried out in all connected rooms.
Information sources can be programmes on discs, tapes, projecting apparatus and any other media as well.
"This is actually a school network that can be either detached or connected to the Internet," said the chief engineer. "Scientists in NUDT are conducting further research according to market demand. Since we are always facing new demands from our clients, we have to keep improving our products."
Yet the chief engineer acknowledged that all the company's multimedia systems, which encourage teachers to write programmes to meet their needs, may be frustrated due to a lack of programming ability.
