Healthier in spare time

IN the villages of suburban Shenzhen, many people used to spend their holidays playing mahjong. Countless nights found quartets of players seated around their mahjong tables, with perhaps others looking on, whiling the long hours away.
The past week-long holiday from May 1 to 7, though, saw a different picture among the people living in those villages.
In the Culture and Sport Square of Henggang Township in Longgang District, which is renowned for its ballroom dancing, more than 3,000 people moved to the music.
"Today I come with two friends from my hometown. Here we want to dance and work up a sweat," said Wang Jianpin, a migrant worker from Hunan Province, has he danced.
The 5,000-square-metre dance floor was full of people from all walks of life, such as government officials, villagers and employees from foreign enterprises.
"Over the past two years, the township has established more and more modern recreational facilities, and more and more people have developed a liking for dance, bodybuilding and tennis," said Du Jianzhong, manager of the square.
Another township called Pinhu drew an unprecedented crowd of book lovers during the holidays. The township library was full of avid readers - most of them young people.
Longgang Township is particularly known for its love of basketball. Every village there boasts a basketball court and an established team. During the holiday week, the township also hosted its first youth basketball championship in the county.
In other townships such as Buji and Kuichong, people enjoyed movies and lion dancing or visited parks.
"I'd rather buy you some time in the gym than invite you to a meal; and playing mahjong has given way to ballroom dancing". This sentence has become an unofficial motto among township people trying to describe the change in the way they spend their spare time.(Wu Yan)
