CHINA'S first trade fair of ethnic commodities opened yesterday in Shenzhen, giving local and foreign buyers a rare opportunity to order exotic arts and crafts and an array of specialties produced by the country's diverse ethic groups.
Mou Benli, vice-director of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and also director of the fair's organizing committee, said the fair is aimed at giving China's ethnic areas more exposure to the world.
Also considered as a significant push toward the implementation of the develop-the-west strategy, the four-day fair, held at the China Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Centre, is the largest of its kind the country has ever seen.
The fair features over 2,000 exhibitors, several hundred thousand commodities, including Jingde Town's porcelains, Tibet's ‘miracle' drugs and many other famous products.
Ma Kaiming, vice-governor of Sichuan Province and a member of the Yi minority, said exhibitors from his province's dozens of ethnic autonomous districts seek investment, markets, technical expertise and talents from China's wealthy east.
