The Mummy Returns scares up a record
|
THE Mummy Returns made a big return to the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated US$70.1 million -- the most ever earned for any film over a non-holiday weekend.
The previous record holder had been 1998's Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, which tallied US$64.8 million. (Analysts recalled that Phantom Menace played 24 hours a day in many theatres when it opened.)
The take was nearly twice what analysts had expected. "This tells you how hungry the audience is for summer escapist fare,'' Exhibitor Relations chief Paul Dergarabedian said.
The success of the film also reversed the box office slump of April. The top 12 movies grossed US$102.4 million, up 32 per cent from the same weekend a year ago (which saw the opening of Gladiator). (SD-Agencies)
