Mixing old and new

MALAYSIAN-BORN Zang Toi brought the tropical colours of Asia to the New York runway. Nicknamed "The King of Glamour", he is well known for his unique colour sense which translates to exuberance in designs. Crisp tailoring and classical design with a fresh twist make him the clothier for celebrities like Sharon Stone and Ivana Trump.
Zang Toi was born to an ethnic Chinese family. He immigrated to the US at 20 and studied at the Parsons School of Design (class of 1985). His hard work and dedication embodies the American Dream and it shows with his continous successful shows season after season.
With Zang Toi, there is always something old and something new, which could be found in both his sportswear separates and couture gowns.
In one of his show this February, Zang Toi provided a Scottish-Asian fantasy. The collection was smashing. Calling his collection "An Asian in Scotland," the designer, smoothing his kilt, said that he used "a variety of influences to create this line -- plus lots of cashmere, silk and fantasy".
From the beaded Scottish coat of arms to the organza taffeta ball skirts with mohair and Swarovski crystals, it was a gorgeous, luxurious collection. After the finale, which featured a princess ballgown with castle top detail topped off with an 80-carat diamond necklace worth US$10 million, the audience jumped to their feet for a standing ovation.
