A TOTAL of 7,430 illicit guns were destroyed in Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province on Saturday, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Among the weapons were 439 guns for military uses and 4,462 guns for civilian use.
The illegal firearms were tossed into a furnace at the Guangzhou Iron and Steel Plant after being shown to the public at the city's Tianhe Sports Centre.
“Had these firearms not been confiscated, our daily safety would undoubtedly be endangered," some local residents remarked.
A Mr Liu said: “I didn't realize that criminals were so well equipped with weapons. The campaign carried out by the public security bureaus has eliminated the potential danger to the public."
Zhu Mingjian, deputy director of the provincial public security department, revealed that since April this year altogether 550 guns, 3400 bullets and other kinds of firearms were seized throughout the province.
He warned that owners of illegal weapons had best take no chances with the law and hand over the guns and explosives as soon as possible.
