Ethnic fair ends

Flame Wu
TOUTING a trade volume of 53.4 billion yuan (US$640.8m) and investment deals worth 43 billion yuan, the China Ethnic Commodities Trade Fair was rated a success by Mou Benli, vice-director of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and also director of the event's organizing committee.
East-west co-operation characterized the fair, which closed yesterday. Participants tried to combine East China's strengths in human and financial clout with the west's rich natural resources to boost mutual development.
Long Chaoyun, from Guizhou Province in West China and one of the 14 vice provincial governors who led their respective delegations, thought of the fair as an opportunity to learn from SZ and other provinces. “Through the fair, we wanted to promote Guizhou and seek co-operation partners," he said.
The fair features many categories of commodities produced by the country's ethnic groups, most of which are in the western regions. The exotic costumes and ornaments from the Uygur people, the Mongolians and other ethnic groups were a big draw at the fair. Silver ornaments, wax printings, embroidery works and knittings as well as the clothes were tried on and bought by countless people every day.
Many medicines native to the ethnic groups were made known to the public for the first time at the fair. Medicines from the Uygurs, Tibetans, Mongolians, Miaos and others have rich histories, but are unknown to most people outside these ethnic groups. Furthermore, medicine distributors from various areas of the country also plunged into active contact with the ethnic drug makers.
Ethnic food was another focus of attention. Shenzheners are mostly immigrants from all over China. It seems that the fair satisfied their craving for their native food with a display of a wide variety of the specialties.
Many ethnic regions have rich tourism potential. Several meetings were held at the fair to introduce some tourist projects that seek investment capital.
