SIR - I read of a terrible homicide story in a newspaper recently, in which a girl was killed by her boyfriend. Their neighbours heard clearly their loud quarrel and fierce struggle before the killing, but they neither tried to calm down these two "mad" young people, nor did they call the police. The girl was beaten to death and cut into nine pieces by her boyfriend.
What I feel is worse than this awful crime is the fact that some people can be so cool towards the crimes around them. There have been several similar stories. Why are some people so cold-hearted? What will society finally look like if everyone ignores the suffering of others?
Fighting crime isn't only the task of the police, but also the duty of every citizen. When you are in trouble or even threatened by criminals, how will you feel if your cry for help is ignored and rejected coldly? Indifference can become a plague, for it can pervade every aspect of our lives.
Ensuring a safe and sound social environment needs the unremitting efforts of everyone. Let's stand up and say loudly "no" to all vicious behaviour. Only when a "great wall" to safeguard the justice is integrated in everyone's mind, can your personal rights and interests be fully protected!
