MISS Puerto Rico, Denise Quinones, was crowned Miss Universe 2001 at a glitzy pageant in Puerto Rico on Friday night, sweeping away contestants from 76 other countries with her dazzling smile and delighting a wildly cheering home crowd.
Second-placed was Miss Greece, Evelina Papantoniou, while Miss USA, Kandace Krueger, was third.
The winners were announced after a two-hour extravaganza near the sultry Puerto Rico capital of San Juan. The crowd went wild as Quinones, a 20-year-old singer and dancer, was announced winner. Sirens and horns outside the arena erupted as Puerto Ricans celebrated their fourth Miss Universe title.
"I always dreamed about and visualized winning," Quinones told reporters: "Thank God it happened. I was very confident in myself."
The new Miss Universe gets to live for a year rent-free in a luxury apartment in a Trump building in New York City and receives a salary and clothes allowance. In exchange, she does promotional and charity work and travels around the world.
