Mountain road to reopen
|
THE long-disused Wutong Mountain Road is slated to be reopened in the near future, according to the Yantian District Government.
The road's reopening has appeared as a solution to the traffic jams and high tolls at the Wutong Mountain Tunnel. It will provide another choice for travellers headed for the beaches in the eastern areas of Shenzhen.
It is reported that the road will be repaired and expanded to allow traffic flow of 10,000 vehicles every 24 hours. Planners say that, once the repair work is completed, drivers can travel along the road's length in only 15 or 20 minutes at a maximum speed of 30km/h.
The road, which runs between Liantang in Luohu District and Shatoujiao in Yantian District, used to play a vital role in the city's traffic network before the Wutong Mountain Tunnel was built at the beginning of the 1990s. As traffic flow declined, the road was closed and has since become somewhat dilapidated.(Vivian Li)
