Teach yourself to speak(II)
|
深圳大学文学院 何道宽
Take the phrase "above all". As soon as you've learnt it, you 'd better find ways to use it in as many situations as possible. Examples for some possible situations are as follows:
1. For him work is above all.
2. The interests of the country are above all.
3. For a huge country like China, the problem of food is above all.
4.Above all else I recommend Guilin as the first stop on your visit.
5.Love is above all.
6.Interest is the teacher above all teachers.
The third word in my advice is perseverance. Persevere to work out the most efficient study methods suitable for yourself. There is no one best method for everybody, just as teaching methods vary with different teachers and students. From the most crazy "Crazy English" to the most conservative "grammar-translation method", all methods properly applied can make wonders----with different people. There's nothing difficult in the world for people with a strong will power and determination to accomplish what they want. But of course, diligence must go hand in hand with appropriate methods and "tricks". They are not panaceas passed on to you by any "authority". Rather they are what you find most suitable for yourself.
The last word is single-mindedness. It is a warning against people who set low demands on themselves. One of the "tricks" to ensure success is single-mindedness for a single-minded goal: a respectable command of spoken English.
