8 killed in forklift rampage

THE government of Shenzhen has urged relevant departments to take proper measures following a killing spree by a disgruntled forklift driver that left eight people dead and six injured.
Zhang Gaoli, secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, ordered six measures to be taken in the aftermath of the killing rampage, including the proper treatment of the injured.
Longgang District authorities confirmed on Monday that eight people, including a pair of young lovers, were killed when Zhu Hanbiao, a forklift driver, ran into crowds with his vehicle as he drove out of his factory in a 30-minute rampage on Sunday afternoon after failing to secure a loan of 100,000 yuan (US$12,000) from the factory.
Zhu struck the head of the factory's manager with a hammer before driving a forklift to a commercial street where more than 1,000 people were shopping.
Witnesses, struck dumb as they watched the forklift run over three women multiple times until they were apparently dead, later said casualties could have been reduced if a security van trailing the killer forklift had reacted immediately.
According to witnesses, the police arrived at the market at 7.20pm before rushing to the factory where Zhu was hiding and resisting arrest.
After a one-and-a-half-hour standoff, the police opened fire at Zhu who fell from the fourth floor and died instantly.
Zhu, said to have had a taste for gambling and prostitutes, had wanted to obtain a loan from the factory to cover expenses resulted from an accident which happened to him on May 12, his colleagues said. (Richard Lin)
