Farmer jailed for cattle slurry injection
|
A BRITISH farmer was jailed for three years on monday for injecting his cattle with slurry in an attempt to claim compensation.
Cornelius Keane, 37, admitted four charges of attempting to defraud the Department of Agriculture by faking the symptoms of tuberculosis. Had Keane's plan been successful he stood to gain a one-off payment of about £16,000 along with a further about £750 each month for as long as his farm in Bawnbue, near Drimoleague, Co Cork, remained under the department's restrictions.
Keane injected 49 of his 133 cattle with slurry washings from his milking parlour. The cows had suffered very considerable cruelty. Keane apologized to the court and said that he had been in financial difficulty.
