Governor disciplined for accidents
|
CHENG ANDONG, governor of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, was given administrative punishment by the State Council for the lax safety management in his province, which are blamed for three major accidents in April.
Cheng was given a demerit and another 20 officials in the province were either sacked or given varied administrative punishments.
Gas explosions in two local coal mines killed 38 and 48 people on April 6 and 21.
In another accident on April 8, 17 people were killed when a stampede broke out in a tunnel under the famous Huashan Mountain.
Human errors were cited in the investigations of all three accidents.
As part of the punishment, the provincial government was ordered to learn from the accidents and present a self-criticism to the State Council.
Further investigations into the causes of the accidents are still going on, and those who are suspected of breaking the law will be taken to court.
Cheng is believed to be the first governor punished after the State Council issued a new regulation on April 29 which subjects governors and ministers to criminal or administrative punishment for serious accidents.(SD-Agencies)
