Chengdu lures SZ investment

THE WESTERN Chinese city of Chengdu has sent a strong signal to SZ investors thinking of riding the country's high-profile Go-West campaign tide that they will get lucrative investment opportunities in the capital city of Sichuan Province.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a trade promotion yesterday, Chengdu Mayor Li Chuncheng tried to entice local funds and technologies to go to his city by describing it as an "investment bonanza".
"Chengdu's role as one of southeast China's hubs of technology and science, trade, finance and telecommunications is getting increasing attention from domestic and international investors during the Go West campaign," Li said.
He went on to show the roughly 1,000 would-be investors some of the city's allure by adding that it is rich in natural resources and boasts more than 490,000 researchers and technicians and 29 colleges and universities.
Worried about the disparities between the country's rich coastal areas and its interior, China has launched an ambitious revive-the-west campaign by moving funds, technology and talents to the poor 11 western provinces including Sichuan and backwater areas such as Ningxia and Gansu.
Domestic and foreign companies are heeding the calls to remake the west, with many moving into the vast terrain of western China to search for investment opportunities.
With its apparent advantages in geographic position, cultural heritage and large pool of talents, Chengdu is widely listed as one of the most promising cities in the process of the campaign.
"Get your money ready and come invest in Chengdu, you will reap huge gains," Li promised.
