'Filthy Guangzhou' story slammed
|
GUANGZHOU Municipal Government has furiously rebuked an outspoken local newspaper over a report that the capital city of Guangdong Province has been listed among the 10 most polluted cities in the world.
The daily Southern Metropolitan News, a sister publication of the official Nanfang Daily, carried a report on Tuesday saying that eight of the world's 10 most polluted cities were in the Chinese mainland, among them Guangzhou.
The report shocked the Guangzhou Municipal Government, which called an urgent press conference on Tuesday afternoon to express its “outrage'', the Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday.
Jiang Congzhou, director of the Guangzhou Municipal Government's environmental protection authority, said the city was not even among the 10 worst cities in the Chinese mainland.
The Guangzhou Municipal Government was reserving its right to take legal action against the Southern Metropolitan News, the Yancheng Evening News reported.
The report by the Southern Metropolitan News quoted a mainland official working in the Asian Development Bank as saying in Beijing that eight mainland cities were listed among the 10 worst-polluted in the world.(SD-Agencies)
