Human error set loose wayward train
|
THE runaway train that streaked across northwestern Ohio for two hours on Tuesday before being brought under control was sent on its way by human error, the freight company that operates it said on Wednesday.
An extensive investigation into the incident revealed that the engineer manning the freight train in Toledo hit the throttle instead of the brake before jumping off the train to man a switch.
By the time he realized his mistake, the train was moving too fast for him to correct it.
"This is a good employee, with 35 years of service and clean record. He acknowledged that he made a serious error in judgment, and he will be held accountable," the train's operator, CSX Transportation Inc, said in a statement.
The wayward train raced 66 miles (105 kilometres) south from Toledo at speeds of up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour before CSXT engineers were able to slow, then stop it, by coupling another locomotive to the rear of the train.(SD-Agencies)
