SHENZHEN student Ma Qicheng returned from the United States yesterday with three very special souvenirs: awards from an international science fair for young people.
Ma, a Senior Two student of Shenzhen Experimental School, designed a computer mouse that can be clicked by foot, an invention which earned second prize at the 52nd Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (INTELISEF) in San Jose, California, plus a special award by NASA and a full scholarship worth US$73,000 to Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Four non-American students won the scholarship and Ma is the only winner from Asia.
INTELISEF, organized by the United States' Science and Technology Service Association and designed to develop the innovation and skills of students under 21, is considered the most influential science event for juveniles in the world.
This year's seven-day fair has attracted over 1,200 contestants from 39 countries.
Ma's invention, which is said to boost the efficiency of computer users by 30 per cent and be of great help for handicapped people, was first showcased at China's 10th National Science Innovation Competition for Juveniles last summer.
Principal Jin Shiru of the school said at an interview yesterday that Ma's achievement is proof that China's education system is shifting from test-oriented to quality-oriented learning.
Ma has among the school's highest scores. He has also won many national awards at maths, physics and computers.
Ma, who is fond of inventing, was named one of the country's 100 little academicians of sciences last October.
