POLICE in Wuhan, capital city of central China's Hubei Province, recently uncovered a sports lottery scam and arrested a man named Zhang Guoxin. Police say he put screw caps into eight Ping Pong balls used for a lottery in an attempt to affect the result, the Guangzhou Daily reported on Saturday.
The scam was exposed on April 20 while the lottery was being conducted publicly. Zhang Mo, the notary who was announcing the lottery numbers, declared them invalid.
The local police authorities organized a team of 60 officers to investigate the case. After a month-long investigation, they finally identified Zhang Guoxin as the suspect.
Zhang Guoxin, 45 and jobless, allegedly dreamed up the plot in March in the vain hope of swindling five million yuan (US$60,000).(Alfred Zhang)
