MINSK World, the military theme park that draws legions of weaponry afficionados, was the site of an emotional press conference on Friday to announce the release of a new war movie entitled Purple Sun. "I learned a lot by playing the role of a Japanese girl in this movie," said a tearful Qiantian Zhihui, the movie's star, who is also Japanese in real life.
"I realize it is a historic fact that Japan invaded China during the Second World War and inflicted terrible suffering on the Chinese people. As a Japanese, I want to say 'Sorry' to you here."
"We should respect history. We can't change our history, but we can change our future," she added.
Movies which explore the theme of war always attract attention. After Red Valley and Love of the Yellow River, Feng Xiaonin---a renowned war movie director---has now rolled out Purple Sun, the third installment of his wide-screen war trilogy.
The film, in which Chinese, Japanese and Soviets are portrayed, held its premiere at Minsk World on Friday. Feng Xiaonin led the leading cast--- along with actors Fu Dalong and Qiantian Zhihui (Japanese) ---to take questions from the media.
While being asked why the premiere was held in Minsk World, Feng explained: "Because the naval battle scenes were shot at Minsk World, and what's more, the atmosphere seemed fitting."
The movie is set at the end of Second World War. Soviet soldiers save a Chinese peasant---Yang Yufu---from a Japanese massacre. But as they are heading home, they find themselves surrounded by Japanese soldiers. Yang Yufu, together with a female Soviet doctor, manage to escape into a forest where they met a Japanese girl. The lives of the three characters intertwine in the mysterious but beautiful forest.
The movie points an accusing fingers at the people who committed such atrocious crimes during the war.
So far the movie has been well received in the inland cities where it has been screened.
Purple Sun will be shown in all local movie theatres this week.
