Shekou: 'island of piano'
|
GULANGYU, an island of Xiamen, Fujian Province, is renowned for its beauty. It is also sometimes referred to as "piano island" by musicians in China, for the popularity there of the instrument. But lately, ambitious Shekou is vying to achieve a similar status here in Shenzhen.
It is estimated that there are at least 2,000 pianos in Shekou. Put another way, there is one piano for every ten families.
Local residents have become used to being surrounded by piano music. One middle school music teacher recently said he can hear pianos playing from each storey of his apartment building.
More and more children in Shekou, and even their parents, are taking to the piano. Piano level tests are always discussed when parents get together. The number of locals who go in for the annual level tests has soared in recent years. Even some of Shekou's many foreigners have been bitten by the bug, sending their kids to learn how to play, or even picking up the instrument themselves.(Peng Zhaoxia)
