14 notorious gangsters executed
|
FOURTEEN members of a gang convicted of murdering and robbing their way through Central China were executed yesterday in the final chapter of probably the most violent crime saga in the history of modern China.
Notorious gang leader Zhang Jun and his ruthless lieutenant Li Zejun were executed separately in the Chongqing Municipality and Changde city, Hunan Province.
Other gang members were also executed in the two cities.
Zhang and Li led a gang of 18, and together they carried out a stunning cold-blooded killing spree from 1991 to June 2000 that resulted in 28 murders and 22 armed robberies in Chongqing and the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Yunnan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The gang members, who were convicted of amassing 5.4 million yuan (US$650,000) of stolen money and goods during the spree, were convicted and sentenced to death in separate trials on April 21.
Zhang, 34, was arrested in Chongqing last September following a botched robbery of an amoured car.
Four of Zhang's lovers were also executed yesterday, three of whom had children with other men.
One of his lovers, Quan Hongyan, confessed to police that she was forced to kill a young man in the city of Changsha, Hunan Province last May to prove her loyalty to Zhang, the China Daily reported earlier.
She told police Zhang often forced his accomplices to kill people as a method of ensuring they would not betray him to the police. (SD-Agencies)
