Gray-haired role models end SZ tour
|
A GROUP of 100 retired role models from all over the country ended their organized tour in SZ on Saturday.
The gray-haired team consisted of renowned professors and scholars as well as farmers and workers, at an average age of 67 with the oldest being in his eighties.
Zhang Wenfan, the tour organizer and director of China National Committee on Aging (CNCA), said: "China's current prosperity was molded by these senior citizens."
Zhang's organization and SZ Municipal Government jointly initiated the trip in order to offer the group an opportunity to see and feel the dynamic and positive changes that have occurred in the south's economy.
Digi Zhoigar, a former sanitation worker from Lhasa, stood on SZ's golden beach, overlooking the surging sea for the first time after years of road construction and sewage dredging.
"It is an earthly heaven indeed," cried the Tibetan woman.
Dai Libin, former vice president of Wuhan University, said thathe came to Shenzhen every two years and found the city continuously improving in every aspect.
Dai said he had been to many countries and was really proud of Shenzhen's superiority to other foreign cities in terms of urban planning and construction.
Some members even planned to settle down in Shenzhen after the three-day stay here. A doctor from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said that living in the garden city will make her feel young forever.
Shenzhen, a former fishing village, has developed into a modern city with a population of about four million over the past 20 years.
Statistics show that the city's GDP amounted to some 160 billion yuan (about US$19.35 billion) in 2000. Foreign trade volume totalled some US$64 billion.(Xinhua)
