Wild animals
GUANGZHOU: As of July 1, anyone who knowingly consumes State-protected wild animals or their products will be fined up to 10,000 yuan (US$1,200), according to a new regulation passed on June 1 by the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress.
Those who illegally hunt, process, buy or kill State-protected wild animals will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan.
Officials sacked
BEIJING: Several forest administration officials in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have been sacked and 20 other people have been arrested for alleged illegal logging of virgin forest.
The unauthorized logging of virgin forest in West China is strictly banned under the country's laws as China has moved to protect its fragile environment.
Fishing ban
HAIKOU: Fishing will be banned over the next two months in the South China Sea as the country's summer fishing ban became effective at 12am on Friday.
The number of fishing boats participating in the ban total 3,926,228 more than last year, sources said.
Charter flight
ZHENGZHOU: A weekly charter flight service between Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province and Bangkok, capital of Thailand, is scheduled to start on June 30.
Zhengzhou is the 10th Chinese city to establish direct air links with Bangkok.
City honoured
DALIAN: Dalian, a coastal city in Northeast China's Liaoning Province, has won the title of “Global Top 500” given by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the city government announced on Friday.
Dalian is the first city in China to win the title.
