More stringent actions against gang crimes?

Wu Yan
GANG crimes are among the most serious crimes in the country and are also the main target of the ongoing nationwide "strike-hard" campaign which started in early April. Documents show that the number of major crimes, including bombings, murders, robbery and kidnapping is on the rise.
In compliance with the guideline set by the Central Government, the city of Shenzhen is taking an active part in the "strike-hard" campaign, which is characterized by the mobilization of all walks of life, not just police.
The anti-crime campaign in Shenzhen has brought dramatic results, touting a steep drop in the crime rate. About 2,000 criminal cases have been solved and nearly 400 gangs broken up so far.
Will the "strike-hard" campaign strike harder, and how will it continue?
Lin Kairong, official of the Legal Commission of SZ Municipal Committee of CPC.
No doubt the campaign should go harder, especially against criminal gangs, which are more dangerous than individual criminals. We have outlined four requirements for the next phase. They are more effective priorities, better performance, better coordination and more tangible results.
We'll increase the momentum of the ongoing campaign to solve more cases and crack down on more gangs and punish more criminals. In addition, the city's 100,000 security guards will be further mobilized to participate in the "strike-hard" campaign.
This September and October will witness a particular move against gang crimes, when we'll have two great events - the 9th Sports Meet of Guangdong Province and the China Hi-Tech Fair.
Peng Angong, deputy chief of SZ criminal police
I really want the strike against criminal gangs to go harder. Gang crimes are the main target of our work. And such criminals commit all the most serious crimes.
The campaign has been going on for some time, during which we have wiped out the gangs that exist on the surface of society. At the same time, we have unearthed evidence about those hidden deeper that will be the target of our efforts. We'll track down the criminals to get firm evidence, such as the hideouts of drug traffickers.
Li Daseng, housing estate security guard chief
"Strike-hard" is necessary. In the residential area where I work, most crimes were committed by gangs. They pose real dangers to all of us. Once I was almost stabbed by one of them. The harder you strike, the less crimes we'll have, and the fewer complaints about our work.
Liu Rong, primary school teacher
We absolutely need to strike harder against the gangs. Even some students organize gangs to bully or extort money from other students.
On the other hand, with the gangs from outside being destroyed, order will be restored in school. Children will realize that crime does not pay.
