FIFTEEN passengers on an air-conditioned minibus driving from Zhuhai to Shenzhen narrowly escaped death on Saturday.
All the passengers were found to be sleeping when the bus arrived at the Tongle Inspection Station and was boarded by police officials for the routine documents check every vehicle is given before entering the special economic zone.
One of the soldiers called a passenger several times. The drowsy man opened his eyes with great difficulty and was unable to produce his papers.
Looking around, the two soldiers realized that some passengers looked very pale and others even began to vomit.
The soldiers quickly got the 15 passengers off the bus and lay them down outside. Within 10 minutes they were all conscious.
According to investigators, the incident was the result of carbon monoxide leaking into the fully-sealed bus from the engine.
It is said that all of the passengers were cadres from the Local Taxation Bureau of Hebei Province in North China. They were then on the way to Shenzhen for a fact-finding tour.
