Sardine
沙丁鱼
Cans of sardines in oil or tomato sauce (蕃茄酱) are a familiar sight on supermarket shelves. The fish are so named because they were first caught near Sardinia, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea (地中海).
Canned sardines are tightly packed together in small cans. From this comes the expression "packed like sardines". "The passengers were packed like sardines in a bus." You may have had this experience, too: You and other people were squashed (挤) together like sardines in a lift.
