EIGHT oil companies based in Shekou held a joint activity to mark World Environment Day yesterday afternoon.
Despite heavy rain, employees from the companies spread information on depletion of the ozone layer, waste disposal and recycling, forest protection and other environmental knowledge to residents in the community.
“Oil companies in Shekou have a long tradition of care for community development, helping the people protecting the environment of the areas in which we operate,” said Fang Zhi, general manager of China National Offshore Oil Co (CNOOC) Shenzhen Ltd.
When being interviewed, Greg Rohloff, general manager of Amoco Orient Petroleum Co, also said it is their pleasure to promote World Environment Day and serve the local community.
“Though we are guests here, we also call it home since we live here. It really makes sense for us to make our neighbourhood one of Shenzhen's most healthy and beautiful communities,”he said.
The eight oil companies involved in the activity were: Arco, Amoco, CACT, CNOOC, Halliburton, JHN, Phillips and Statoil.
From June 5 to 16, 1972, the United Nations held a meeting on the subject of the living environment of human beings. Since then, the opening day of that meeting has been set aside as World Environment Day.
