SZ starts to forecast air quality

SHENZHENERS now have access to a daily air quality forecast under a new system which started yesterday. The prediction of the next day's air quality is worked out by the Shenzhen Municipal Environment Monitoring Station and the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory.
“From the weekly report on air quality which debuted in August 1997 and the daily report on June 5, 2000 to today's forecast, these milestones mark our progress in environmental protection,” Chen Weiyuan, deputy director-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said.
Experts in environmental protection say that people will benefit greatly from this move because air quality is closely related to people's health. With the air quality forecast, people will be in a better position to avoid potential damage to their health.
For instance, when the API (Air Pollution Index) is somewhere between 100 and 200, people who are sensitive to air pollution should reduce their outdoor activities, such as jogging and swimming. And if the API climbs to 200, it means the air is severely polluted and everyone should avoid long-time exposure in the open air and outdoor sports activities are not recommended and sightseeing in downtown should be cancelled.
The forecast is available on TV after the evening news and in newspapers. It is also available at two websites: www.szmb.gov.cn and www.api-shenzhen.gov.cn.
