Fuel prices soar

GAS stations in Shenzhen introduced the sixth price hike of the year on Wednesday. No 97 and No 90 gasoline rose from 3.5 and 3.0 to 3.7 and 3.15 yuan per litre respectively.
Hong Jue, an official with the Shenzhen Prices Inspection Station, said almost all gas stations in Luohu District have been found to have been involved in irregularities in pricing.
He also criticized station operators in the city for being quick to follow price hikes instituted by the Shenzhen Petroleum Company but slow to cut prices.
Fuel stations always follow a price hike immediately while it usually takes one or two days for a price reduction to come into effect, Hong said.
The law stipulates that fuel prices should be fixed by the government, Hong said, but fuel stations usually offer price discounts to big customers.
Related government departments are reluctant to take actions against the irregularities because so many stations are involved, according to Hong.
