Thank you, Professor Dan
|
TWO piano concerts held by international prize winners Li Yundi, Chen Sa and Zuo Zhang on Tuesday and Wednesday won passionate applause here in Shenzhen, not only because the musicians were skillful but because the young performers conveyed deep gratitude toward their teacher Dan Zhaoyi in their playing.
The concerts originated from a suggestion made while Professor Dan Zhaoyi was celebrating his 60 birthday with his students. "Why not have a concert by Dan's three most excellent students". The idea was applauded by all present.
"I've taught Li Yundi for 10 years, Chen Sa for nine years, and Zuo Zhang for six years." said Professor Dan, "Now Li is going to pursue his studies in Germany, Chen also plans to continue her study abroad. I'm glad that they can perform together."
Li Yundi, the first prizewinner at the Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, says he owes all his success to his teacher: "My road was designed by Professor Dan, he is just like my father."
Chen Sa, who won fourth place at the Chopin Competition, has already obtained a master's degree in Britain. She still remembers the days when Professor Dan took her to international competitions and the courage Dan instilled in her.
Someone said at a press conference after Li and Chen won the Chopin prizes: "We have the best students because we have the best teacher in China."
Zuo Zhang, a junior one middle school student, has already won international prizes in Japan and the United States. The girl hae a secret weapon for her success: Professor Dan's notes. Whenever she felt frustrated or nervous, Dan gave her a note, containing either words of encouragement or detailed instructions. She still remembers the note he gave her during a competition in the United States: "You are winning now", with a smiling face at the end.
Many parents took their children to the concerts. One said to her child, a piano student, "You should not only learn their excellent playing skills, but also learn how to say thanks to your teacher."(Windy Shao)
