Qinghua opens institute

AS of today, the Qinghua Shenzhen Postgraduate Institute is officially open for business.
The institute, the first of many members of Shenzhen University Town to begin operations, is the only education base of the university outside Beijing.
It hopes to become an important base for innovative personnel training and cutting-edge science research, and is considered a high-level, comprehensive research institute specializing in postgraduate programmes and advanced professional training with a full capacity of 3,000 students by 2005.
Five subject clusters including information science and technology, life science and bio-technology, new materials and environmental science form the framework of the institute.
According to the institute's development plan, four nationwide influential research centres in electronics and communication, computer science and research, network systems and a nanotechnology laboratory will be established in the following five years.
The institute is included in the city's overall planning for higher learning and local economic development.
The university has decided to assign over 150 teachers including 60 tutors for doctorate degree students and five academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering to work in its Shenzhen institute.
