City needs more cornea donors
|
THERE is still far greater demand for corneas in Shenzhen than supply, even though 11 people have made donations so far.
According to SZ Red Cross, each year around 100 Shenzheners wait anxiously for cornea transplants to regain their sight. Unfortunately, countless valuable corneas are wasted. Volunteer donors are still in short supply due to objections from their family members. Experts have called on people to change their attitudes on organ donation, and say that in time it will become as publicly accepted as blood donation.
It is reported that China has about three million blind people suffering from cornea diseases, 70 per cent of which can regain their eyesight through cornea transplants. But only about 3,000 people receive such operations each year.
Xiang Chunmei, a teacher from Hunan University, became SZ's first cornea donor when she donated her corneas after dying of cancer in SZ in 1999.(Vivian Li)
