UNTIL now, to the golf fans in China the accomplishments of world number one Tiger Woods have always been viewed from afar. However, all that will change due to the invitation from David Chu, chairman of Mission Hills Golf Club.
An official from the Asia's largest golf club confirmed on Tuesday that Woods would make his first ever trip to China to take on three leading Asian professionals in the southern boom city of Shenzhen in November.
"Woods is scheduled to appear at the Mission Hills Golf Club from November 9 to 11 to challenge professionals from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei," said Cecilia Chan from the golf club's Communications Department.
Robbie Henchman, director of Golf-IMG Asia which looks after Woods' business interests, said during a press conference in Beijing last Thursday that Woods would play with three leading Asian professionals during the three-day event. But Chan said that Woods' competitors at the event have not yet been picked.
The event will also feature activities with junior golfers, a skills challenge and a pro-am. Amateur golfers will have a great opportunity to learn tips from the 25-year-old Woods, said Chan.
"Since I first saw the proposal for the event in China, I have been very excited, because China has the largest youth population in the world, and a great history in sport," said Woods in a message from the United States.
After his three-day trip to Shenzhen, Woods, the first ever golfer to hold all four professional major championships at the same time, will move on to Japan to defend his World Cup title.
