BEIJING: China will use a microchip-embedded card to replace the existing ID card that is made from paper and wrapped in a transparent plastic coating.
The new ID system will enable automatic identification by storing personal information on the microchip in a plastic card, according to Qiu Xuexin, director of the No 1 Research Institute under the Ministry of Public Security.
China will probably launch a pilot programme to test the system in some big cities by the end of this year. It will take up to five years for the 1.3 billion Chinese people to switch from the first generation ID card to the second generation ID system, and both cards will co-exist before the replacement is complete.
Ecological park
HEFEI: A farmer throws water plants into a fish pond in Huaibei City in East China's Anhui Province on Monday. The authorities has developed aquatic products industry by turning 7,333 ha of sinking areas due to mining into fish ponds and other kinds of ecological parks.
Disposal fee
TIANJIN: As of July 1, residents of Tianjin, a largest port city in North China, will have to pay a fee for the garbage they discharge daily.
The money will be directly used to help conduct garbage disposal, including covering the cost of transportation and the construction of disposal facilities.
