Locusts plague Xinjiang
|
AN outbreak of locusts is causing severe damage in the northern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to officials with the Xinjiang Locusts and Rats Prevention Commission.
Statistics indicate that about 1.33 million hectares are currently bearing the brunt of the infestation. And more lands will be affected as locust eggs hatch with rising temperatures.
There are more than 150 locust species in Xinjiang, according to officials with the prevention commission. Due to a cooler spring this year, the locust outbreak in northern Xinjiang arrived 10 to 20 days later than the previous years. But the situation grim nevertheless, made worse by an invasion of foreign locusts from Russia and Kazakstan.
Three aircraft have been assigned to spray insecticide in northern Xinjiang.
Meanwhile, farmland and forests in many parts of Northeast China's Liaoning Province are being plagued by insects, posing a big threat to the province's agriculture. A severe drought is lingering in the province.
At present, Liaoning Province is on alert, and measures are being taken to eradicate those insects before they cause even more damage.(Alfred Zhang)
