Locusts plague Xinjiang
|
AN outbreak of locust plague is causing severe damage in the northern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to officials with the Xinjiang Locusts and Rats Prevention Commission.
Statistics indicate that about 1.33 million hectares of lands are currently being plagued by locusts. And more lands will be affected as eggs of the insect hatched with rising temperature.
There are more than 150 species of locusts in Xinjiang, according to officials with the prevention commission. Due to the lower temperature in spring this year, the locust outbreak in northern Xinjiang is 10 to 20 days later than the previous years. But the situation is not eased, with the invasion of foreign locusts from Russia and Kazakstan.
Three aircraft have been assigned to spray insecticide in northern part of Xinjiang.
Meanwhile, farmlands, forests in many parts of Northeast China's Liaoning Province are being plagued by insects, posing a big threat to the province's agriculture. Severe droughts are lingering in the province.
At present, alerts are high in Liaoning Province, and measures are being taken to eradicate those insects before they cause even more damage.(Alfred Zhang)
