Macedonia recognizes People's Republic of China

THE Macedonian government on Tuesday decided to officially recognize the People's Republic of China, a move which will automatically end its “diplomatic ties” with Taiwan, government spokesman Antonio Milososki said.
“The government decided to normalize relations between Macedonia and China. This decision means there will be consequences on our relations with Taiwan,” said Milososki. “We reaffirmed the goal of one China.”
He said no date had yet been set for a signing ceremony with a Chinese representative.
Skopje switched recognition to Taiwan in 1999 in return for a lucrative investment deal, making Macedonia the only European ally of Taiwan apart from the Vatican. Critics of the move — made without notifying the then president Kiro Gligorov — said it would alienate Macedonia from China, which is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Macedonia is currently being rocked by an ethnic Albanian rebellion which threatens to rip the multi-ethnic state apart.
