AN IMPORTANT common understanding at the two-day International Think Tank Forum 2001 is that the future of the new economy in Asia is bright, and China is playing an increasingly important role in its development.
Experts at the forum agreed that the most important factor holding back the development of the new economy in Asia is the absence of innovation in economic systems and institutional infrastructures.
The forum concluded in Shenzhen on Saturday afternoon after fruitful discussions among economic experts from the world's leading think tanks and large enterprises on the theme of the new economy and Asia.
Gao Shangquan, president of the State Economic System Reform Association, said during his speech at the closing ceremony on Saturday that the forum had provided much helpful information for China to resolve the problems and challenges in developing the new economy.
Many local entrepreneurs described the gathering as a golden opportunity to absorb the ideas of the world's best economists on the latest developments and future trend of the global economy, which is vital for them in mapping out development strategies.
More than 400 representatives, including top economic experts and scholars from international organizations and think tanks, as well as heads of mainland enterprises and research institutes, attended the forum, which was sponsored by the China Development Institute, the National Institute of Research Advancement of Japan and two local partners.
The forum is expected to be held in Shenzhen once a year from now on, according to the sponsors. The last forum was held in the city in 1999.
