Ex-mayor investigated for graft

THE former mayor of Shenyang, capital city of Northeast China's Liaoning Province, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and will now be investigated over corruption charges, State media said on Friday.
Mu Suixin, who resigned from his post as mayor late last year, is suspected of having taken massive kickbacks for years while in positions of power, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
“The amount of bribes he is accused of taking is enormous,” the agency said, citing official sources.
Mu is accused of trading power for money while acting as director of the provincial department of construction, deputy governor of Liaoning and mayor of Shenyang, the agency said.
“Mu's case is typical of how senior officials abuse their power for personal gain,” said Liu Liying, Vice-Chairman of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).
The agency said Mu's case had been transferred to judicial organs for further investigations.
While losing his party membership, Mu has also been dismissed as a deputy to the Ninth National People's Congress, as well as to the provincial and city-level people's congresses.
The scandal surrounding Shenyang's municipal authorities which culminated in Friday's announcement of Mu's disgrace started to evolve in July last year.
That was when vice-mayor Ma Xiangdong was arrested for allegedly taking bribes and squandering about 40 million yuan (US$4.8 million) of State funds in gambling sprees in casinos in Macao.
Since then, the case has implicated more and more people, including the deputy head of the intermediate people's court and Mu's ex-wife, local media reported previously.
