Traffic resumes
CHANGSHA: Rail traffic on a section of the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway in Hunan Province, which was suspended due to landslide, was resumed on Saturday after the debris was cleared away.
Great Wall leap
BEIJING: A Chinese daredevil has made a backwards leap into the Guinness Book of World Records. The motorcyclist cleared the Great Wall on Saturday in his successful attempt to perform the longest backwards-sitting motorcycle jump.
Maritime law
HANGZHOU: A maritime law enforcement campaign started in the East China Sea on Friday to put fishing operations in order and protect the ocean environment.
The campaign, which focuses on cracking down on illegal activities at sea such as violating fishing regulations and contaminating the sea, will last more than 10 days.
New expressway
JINAN: A new expressway connecting five cities in East China's Shandong Province was opened to traffic on Saturday, five months ahead of schedule.
The 389-kilometre expressway, with a total investment of 11 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion), is part of the Beijing-Fuzhou expressway, a national artery which is under construction. Fuzhou is the capital city of Fujian Province, also in East China.
Locust disaster
JINAN: East China's Shandong Province has employed aircraft to kill locusts which have run rampant in some areas of the province since 1998.
A survey shows that in the disaster area in the province, there is an average of one to five locusts per square metre, in some areas, the number is 50 to 100 per square metre, and the highest number was recorded at more than 2,000 locusts per square metre.
