More sites enter World Heritage list
|
CHINA, with its many diverse cultures and its long history, is a firm favourite on UNESCO's World Heritage list. On Friday, a further three Chinese sites were awarded Certificates of World Heritage. They include a classical Suzhou garden in Jiangsu Province, Qingcheng mountain-Dujiang Dam in Sichuan Province and some ancient villages in Anhui Province.
Since the "Treaty of protecting world culture and natural heritage" was signed in 1972, the World Heritage Commission has identified nearly 700 heritage sites around the world.
At the certificate award ceremony, these three spots in China joined the UNESCO World Heritage family as new members. Suzhou gardens in Southern China are well-known for their elaborate-designs, which are typical of the region. Qingcheng mountain in the city of Dujiangyan -- the origin of China's taoism -- draws praise for its splendor. Dujiang Dam has been famous for a long time and is noted for its water conservation. Ancient villages in Anhui Province captivate their visitors with their unique features and idyllic scenery. The most eye-catching amongst them is "Xidi village" which has preserved over 400 buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, from the 14th to the 20th century. Exquisite decorations, including stone and wood engravings, make the village a treasure trove of Chinese folk history.
