Taipei run backs Beijing bid

SOME 5,000 Taiwanese joined 16 athletes from the mainland in a marathon rally in Taipei on Saturday to support Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games.
The relay has attracted such big names as gymnasts Li Xiaoshuang, Li Dashuang, table tennis players Qiao Hong and Lu Lin.
Participants had early in the day gathered at the square of Taipei's Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall chanting “go Beijing go” before they began the run.
“I hope Beijing will succeed in winning the bid. That would be an honour to all the Chinese people,” said a Taiwanese woman taking part in the run.
Saturday's run to Kaohsiung was the first stage of an effort that will link 10 cities in China. The marathon flied to Hong Kong yesterday en route to Shenzhen for the next leg. Runners will pass through Ningbo, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Wuxi, Nanjing, Qingdao before reaching Beijing on June 30.
The International Olympics Committee will decide on July 13 which city will host the Games.(SD-Agencies)
