Nortel invests to expand GSM capacity
|
THE world's leading IT company, Nortel Networks, signed a contract last Tuesday to increase its investment in Chongqing Unicom by US$30 million, expanding Chongqing's GSM network capacity.
The expanded network will go into operation in August when subscribers to the Chongqing Branch of China Unicom, a key rival of China Telcom, will grow by 400,000, a company source said.
At present, this western municipality has only 10,000 registered Internet users and a poor 13.8 per cent possession rate for mobile and fixed phones, seven per cent lower than the nation's average. The deputy-mayor, Zhao Gongqing, said the city will accelerate the widening use of information technology.
Nortel, which entered the Chongqing market in 1989, raked in an annual revenue of US$30.3 billion last year.
